The Carnegie Hall Show for Lake Ontario Waterkeeper
Do you like water and improv, but you never could figure out how to enjoy both at the same time without holding a comedy show at Marineland?
Well, this Wednesday, your dreams will come true (without having to get wet) as the Carnegie Hall Show, a weekly improvised variety show put on by the National Theatre of the World, donates its night’s proceeds to Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and holds a pre-show mixer with special guest Alexandra Cousteau.
Don’t know who/what Lake Ontario Waterkeeper is? “Launched in 2001, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper works hard to create a watershed where you can safely swim, drink, and fish,” according to their site. “Our charity engages in legal processes to enforce environmental laws and help to inform wise decision-making. We educate and mentor people who want to learn more about water quality challenges and environmental law, including student volunteers from many of Canada’s top law schools. We conduct research to identify threats to water quality and natural habitat and to monitor trends in environmental law. We celebrate Lake Ontario and its history by promoting arts events and opportunities.”
And who is Alexandra Cousteau and what will she be doing there? Well, since you asked, she is the founder of Blue Legacy, described on their site as “a catalyst for action and change—promoting ideas for innovative solutions that individuals and communities around the globe can implement to address the issues facing our water planet. [...] Our projects leverage film, educational tools and traditional media along with emerging technologies and social networks to help ‘mainstream’ audiences around the world experience the people, places and systems affected by critical water issues.” And Expedition Blue Planet: North America is ”a 138-day interactive exploration of critical water issues across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The expedition will tour more than 14,500 miles in a biodiesel tour bus converted to serve as a ‘rolling Calypso’ for daily production and web broadcasting of films, photos, and findings.” So there you go.
The shindig—which also includes special guests Herbie Barnes, John Pattison, and Colleen and Paul—is PWYC (though a suggested donation of $10 would be appreciated; proceeds from the night are going directly to Lake Ontario Waterkeeper. The pre-show mixer starts at 7:30 p.m., and the show starts at 9:30 p.m. at Bread & Circus (299 Augusta Avenue, Toronto) on Wednesday, October 6, 2010.
